Nobody will hate it, but at the same time, this feels a bit restrained. Maybe that's the key design of OB releases this old (and this expensive) for brands.
#MACALLAN WHISKEY BLACK MAC#
It's hard to find major fault with ol' Mac 30 but at the same time, after 30 years in oak, this feels extremely safe. This latest release is a peated and subtly smoky expression of the famous Speyside. Malt and more neutral cask are really driving the finish, with a satisfying, complex, vanilla, candied orange, light peppery finish. The Macallan M Black is the successor to the incredible Macallan M. Sweet again, the oak really drives, and it's clear there's minimal wine influence. Quite desserty, with the sweetness coming from sweet oak, vanilla and caramel direction.
#MACALLAN WHISKEY BLACK CRACKED#
Cracked pepper, a hint of black tea and some faint, woody, bitterness on the back palate. Medium mouthfeel, a touch of tannin and big, orange, cream. This latest release is a peated and subtly smoky expression of the famous Speyside single malt, crafted in celebration of the distillery's rich heritage and presented in a black crystal decanter from Lalique, with just 725 decanters produced.Matured in sherry seasoned oak casks and bottled at 45 abv, the Macallan M Black has. Not especially potent, but quite layered. The Macallan M Black is the successor to the incredible Macallan M. An unexpected colour and geometric form challenges all perceptions of traditional decanter design and perfectly offsets the peaty notes of this unique and complex single malt. Oaky tannin, some pop of orange, pear, heather and honey. With exacting processes, long-perfected techniques and a perfect balance of innovation and heritage, M Black celebrates the union of the mastery of crystal and whisky making inside and out. Featuring a combination of cask maturation - sherry, ex-bourbon, french oak - this expression strays from the brands heavily sherried roots a hair. But, focusing on the whiskey: this is Macallan's prestigious 30yr bottling, a member of the Fine Oak series. Flavour notes of warming wood spices open to dark chocolate and ginger, with a rare, lingering, and characterful peat trace.

The smoke-infused spirit matured in these sherry seasoned oak casks has gathered distinction and depth over decades. You can expect Macallan prices to rise like clockwork. There remain at The Macallan Estate rare, black-ended casks holding peated Macallan. This comes of course, as a result of Macallan's pedigree, prices, and Edrington ownership: they strongly believe in keeping premium prices. Perhaps the most expensive sample to cross my desk in some time, it's been precarious and difficult to do what I do with many brands: review their offerings, top to bottom.
